The story of Muskan Foundation goes back in time when we started this initiative with only four children; two center based, two home based and only two teachers. And today, our team has increased to thirty-three children and fourteen teachers. Though in Mumbai, many centers offer therapies to disabled children, most of them do not provide a holistic care that is required for our special kids. Therapists focus at the motor, speech and sensory integration needs of the child. However, it is very important to understand the impact of one disability on the other and accordingly an educational programme, to cater to the special needs of the child, has to be incorporated along with the therapies.

Each child with multiple disabilities is unique. He/She has his/her own set of experiences, medical condition, style of learning, likes dislikes. Thus, two children with the same combination of disabilities cannot share the same programme. Each child will have different learning needs. Thus below mentioned are some of the highlights of our program:
  • Child centered plans are devised keeping in mind the special needs of the child
  • Training the child in all three areas i.e. Cognitive, social and motor
  • Use of appropriate teaching aids, as per the requirement of the child (taking into consideration the visual field, visual acuity, hearing loss, motor etc.)
  • Use of Special equipments such as CCTV, Brailler etc.
  • Developing effective programs and teaching strategies specifically for children with MDVI
  • Providing a suitable and barrier free environment, along with fulfilling the recreational needs of the child.
  • Regular feedback reports to track the progress of the child.
  • Continuously revised education plans & teaching strategies.

The early intervention with MDVI children includes a well-structured process of assessment, diagnosis and consultation as early as when the child is only three months old. In order to roll out an effective programme, we begin with assessment with a multidisciplinary team assessing vision, hearing, intellectual capacity and physical capabilities of each child. The key highlights of this program include:
  • Working along with the parent, to start developing the physical and emotional skills of the child.
  • Working on expressive communication at an early age.
  • Developing the sensory skills of the child.
  • Empowering the parent with the required activities to take with the child even when at home.
  • Providing the necessary counseling and support for the parent.

For the overall development of the child, therapies are equally important. The apt therapy is selected and complemented with special education. Keeping the child’s age in mind, he or she is enrolled in an early intervention program or the special education program.Based on the needs of the child the following therapies are offered at Muskan:

  • Vision Rehabilitation Therapy

We use a unique approach based on the principles of plasticity of the brain. The rehabilitation programme has been devised by an expert low vision consultant and Muskan is the only organization offering this service in Mumbai. Muskan receives many referrals for the programme as99% of the children have shown a marked improvement in their optical and perceptive skills.

  • Physio Therapy

Physio therapy is essentially required for our special children, to work on their motor development. Without this therapy, it becomes extremely difficult for our special children to perform even day to day activities. We have a physio therapist available at the centres, who works with our children, in sessions, at subsidized rates. They also guide our teachers and parents on how to avail the acquired motor skills, in their educational and daily activities.

  • Sensory integration Therapy

Children with multiple disabilities have a lot of sensory issues, which often hinders in their learning process. Some children could be tactile defensive i.e. they do not like the touch of certain textures which in turn could hamper their concept development. For instance, if a child does not like to touch hard objects, he will not understand whether a coconut is hard or soft. So, this therapy not only works to develop their sensory skills, but in turn to develop their concepts as well.

  • Occupational Therapy

The primary occupation of any child is to ‘play’. However, due todevelopmental delays, the child is not able to perform simple skills or entertain himself in recreational activities. Every parent aspires to seeing the child being independent; however, due to the limitations caused by the disability, the level of independence is not achieved. An occupational therapist designs a tailor made program to help the child achieve his age appropriate milestones.

  • Speech Therapy

Our children often develop very good receptive communication skills, but lack in expressive communication. The speech therapist, through different techniques, helps the child communicate his needs, which in turn helps him socialize better.

As our children transition from childhood towards adolescence, they begin to understand their role in society, and start developing their self-esteem. In order to assist them in this, we begin imparting “Pre-vocational skills”, such as simple packaging, art & craft, functional money concept etc.
